Interesting history how it was found, employees were pretty friendly too. ( Which for us made it that much better knowing how hard they worked to make this cave GREAT) Another plus is it’s the cheapest tickets of any of the other caves we went to see. There are steps and tight squeezes, but it is very doable. "Coral" cave formations and some impressive stalagmites. But the tour guide was amazing - by far the best one we had on any of our tours. Didn't have to wait long and was one of the cheaper tours we found. This place was great! The cave is a comfortable 60 degrees year round. If you want someplace to bring the family and get a cave experience I highly recommend this. She made it fun for the adults and children in our group. Phenomenal! The staff was very helpful and very informative. The tour itself was just my family and I and it was nice to explore with the guide and have a small, more personal experience than a huge tourist attraction would bring in. Disappointment didn’t last long when we found crystal onyx caves down the road. Onyx Cave is a wet cave that offers its viewers beautiful cave coral, a wall of cave bacon, and a 40 foot column. The guides tell legends of the 19th and early 20th century explorations and the disputes which preceded the installation of the Mammoth Cave National Park.
We have driven past this cave for years on the way to Mammoth Cave without stopping, and we were really surprised on a recent visit at how much prettier it is compared to its more famous neighbor. Great Onyx Cave was discovered in 1915 by Edmund Turner. Tours of Mammoth Onyx Cave are scheduled throughout the day and no prior reservations are required. Do yourself a big favor, go see mammoth if you must but DO NOT miss Crystal Onyx Cave. Onyx Cave was discovered in 1971 as a parking lot was being constructed for Guntown Mountain Amusement Park; the cave was opened in May of 1973.
Stalactites and stalagmites, lots of column formations and ribbon formations. After we paid and was inside on one of the two tours offered we really was wanting to see the lower half.
