Students attend three contact sessions per semester per module, but sessions can be downloaded from eFundi or UODL’s website during the following week.
Further specialisation in a teaching subject, offered through an Advanced Diploma at Level 7, requires cognate studies in that subject at Level 6 in the entry qualification. 1.10.1.6: Two registration periods for the various levels and modes of study are annually determined in the university calendar, the second of which is reserved exclusively for registration of students in such distance programmes as may be identified annually by the responsible executive dean. Therefore students taking English First Language (LoLT) will complete a total of 388 credits to attain the Diploma in Grade R Teaching. All BEd Intermediate phase students must do six weeks of work integrated learning in Gr 4 – 6 at an approved school, each year. It engages with social issues and global movements concerning Curriculum Studies internationally and nationally. The qualification requires in-depth specialized knowledge, together with practical skills and experience in Intermediate Phase classroom teaching context. The PGCE programme in the Faculty of Education Sciences of the North-West University prepares student teachers to become competent professional educators in a variety of educational and training careers.
1.10.4.1: Subject to the applicable faculty rules and the applicable provisions regarding payable fees, a student may apply in the prescribed manner and within the period indicated for that purpose on the annual university calendar, to amend, cancel or discontinue registration. The UODL at the NWU will in 2018 present the Advanced Certificate in Foundation Phase Teaching (ACT FP), the Advanced Certificate in Intermediate Phase Teaching (ACT IP), and the Advanced Certificate in Senior Phase Teaching (ACT SP). Students who wish to articulate into the BEd degree will be credited with up to 180 credits at the NWU. Should the student not pass the module after the first two successive examination opportunities, whether or not participation took place towards the participation mark and/or examination, the student will fail the module and will have to reregister and pay for the module again. Bachelor of Education (BEd): Minimum 4 years and maximum 8 years (distance) (refer to A rule 1.14.2.4). Foundation Phase teachers must be skilled in identifying and addressing barriers to learning in the early years of schooling, as well as in curriculum differentiation for multiple learning levels within a grade. Academic information such as subject content, discussion forums, important dates, additional resources and supplementary instruction are clearly advised on e-Fundi. Students who are passionate about Special Needs Education and wish to become more knowledgeable in that respect.
ABET qualifications do not provide access to the ACT since they are not school based.

BEdHons programme is offered as a structured two year programme, with a fixed semester curriculum.

From the ACT, students may articulate to the Advanced Diploma in Education (NQF 7), from where they can continue either to the Postgraduate Diploma in Education or the BEdHons, both NQF 8.The Advanced Certificate in Teaching is intended to acknowledge specialised academic or professional studies in education.

This qualification has a specific aim to improve teachers’ knowledge and competences in a new subject, or strengthen their subject specialisation.
The ACT is a new qualification that can fulfil that role.
